Can you tell me the story of your prior successes, challenges, and major responsibilities?
At the age of 21, after graduating from culinary school, I started working as a line cook at a major country club outside of Philadelphia and 6 months after working there, they fired the head chef. They nominated me to be the head chef until they can find a new one. What happened was, they ended up hiring me instead. Typically, to become a head chef, you have to be in the industry forever. It was the first time I had success, challenges and major responsibility. At the age of 21, I managed a restaurant and a catering facility.
I was thrown into a situation where I was the boss of people that were 40, 50 or even 60 years old and a staff of like 20+ people. I ended up being a head chef there for almost 10 years and I did events and weddings for people like the rockefellers…I was able to do the wedding for the daughter of the owner of Mars bars.
Can you tell me about a time when you almost gave up, how you felt about that, and what you did instead of giving up?
In 2015, I shut down my contract in a company to start a digital marketing agency. My first month in my digital marketing agency, I did really well like I made $10k and then I went completely broke…from January 2016 to June 2016…June 2016 — this was the low point for me. I was working day and night, at the end of that month I made like a couple of hundred bucks. I remember my wife was basically, “Do you need to get this thing working or do you need to go back to your job?” For 15 years of my life, I was a chef and I didn’t want to go back to cooking.
I felt really hopeless, instead of going back to cooking, I just started making little daily goals like reaching out to people, trying to make sales and in July I made $1300. Then every month, I started to make more and more and more and then 6 months later, January 2017 is when my agency really took off and we did $30,000 in one month and I never looked back since.
What did I do instead of giving up? I started to focus on my daily activities instead of my what felt like hard situation. Instead of focusing on the bad situation…instead of looking at “How am I ever gonna get out of this?” I just started focusing on what my daily activities were….what am I gonna do today to make a couple $100 bucks. What can I do today? And then everyday I will just focus on that.
